Observations from a Small City on the Edge of a Crumbling Tectonic Economy..

I’ve lived in Seattle since November 25th 2004, and in that time I have seen some slow changes, lost touch with a lot of people who moved on, disappeared left town etc. It’s really not until 2013 that the physical changes happened in the city that I could start to think I was living in a dynamic place.

I came to the US with an expectations of grandeur.

I was really surprised when I got to New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit and DC and was hit in the face with the fact that these were aging cities, and the sense that the people living there, really didn’t have much actual control or say over anything that went on, because democracy got in the way. Id assumed the US was bright shiny and new.
As a European, I had always grown up with places that were maintained and there was a real sense of local pride and everyone was involved in it.

Over the years and traveling around, I’ve seen enough of it to tell me that this country is definitely a continent in decline. A place strangled by conservative values, and disregard for everything except money.

The US is definitely not a place I want to grow old in, and yet, I don’t know where else there is now that hasn’t adopted the same capitalistic values, and with that the utterly destructive nature of that which is held in high regard: individualism.

EyeCup for A7s

Just about the only frustration I have had with the A7s is the fact there is NO available eyecup for it. If I am hand-holding I prefer to shoot video with a camera to my eye for a few reasons. There is as of this time (April 2015) no commercially available eye-cups available for this amazing cinema camera..
So I made by repurposing commercially available parts.

I want a key command

computer

I want a key command for all computers, all operating systems, which…, with a 3 finger key-command or gesture, allows me to open a specific app, use it and close it again with that same gesture.

I want a key command, for all computers & all operating systems. Which- with, a 3 finger key-command or a 3 finger gesture, allows me to open any app, use it and close it again with that same gesture.

Can that be designed?

I also want contextualized right-click in browsers.

Canacona, Goa, India / Night Train Approaching from distance Canacona Goa India

http://aporee.org/maps/work/?loc=23598

Canacona, Goa, India. 1.30am Im staying at a low rent guesthouse at a blind corner on Chaudi-Talpona road which traces the Chaudi river at this point. It is moment away from Monsoon so the water is almost at street level on one side and an embankment on the other. Right at this blind corner there is a single track concrete rail bridge which carries both freight and passenger trails through at a regularity of about 30 minutes during the day and 45-60 minutes at night. Just beyond the blind corner is an egg-shell blue two story hastily erected building and a family home nestled beside it. The rail bridge traverses 8meters from the house and then is swallowed up in foliage on the embankment.
My room is on the ground floor front and center to the lot, it is North facing. It is off season, extremely humid (95%), and extremely hot (45c) despite being on the coast. The area is lush tropical and very quiet.
At night it is almost completely silent, with exception to distant sounds from neighbouring homes and the Hindu and Catholic places of worship (at 3’26” you can hear the chime of a gong or bell).
The trains are traveling in from the north, from Bombay, at night they are mostly freight. You can hear the sound funnel down the rail-track clearing in the dense jungle, it is amplified and you can pick out the pitch changes in the engine as it grunts its way in.
Warning: this track goes from subtle to extremely loud and then very quiet.
Recorded using a Roland R-26, Binaural microphones and a Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun directional microphone, mixed-down and rendered using Audacity. There is some slight clipping at the high peak, as I simply set the best levels I could based on guesswork before making the recording.
Thanks and enjoy.

Design Prototyping

Last night I watched an industrial designer put his engineering mind to work by bringing a medical project to life on the Milling Machine. A complete pleasure to watch as he weaved the machine like a pen around the product as it was taking shape in front of us.

Numerically Controlled Milling

The material is measured for accuracy before milling can commence.

Numerically Controlled Milling

The mill shaft and bit are measured for accuracy using a calliper before milling can commence.

Numerically Controlled Milling

The bit and material are monitored during the first cut to ensure tight tolerances are maintained during the sweep.

Numerically Controlled Milling

The mill bed is manoeuvred into position using a numerically controlled three axis panel, switchable between metric and Imperial measurements within thousandths of and inch and micrometers.
The material is then placed in the mill vice, levelled, tightened and tapped with a hammer to ensure the seating has solid purchase on the material. At this point the mill can be programmed to run its sweep based on the instructions of the operator.

Numerically Controlled Milling

Monitoring the cut during the sweep to ensure consistency of the cut, afterwards the material is checked for possible inconsistencies caused by variables in the cutting process.
