The In Conversation series is part of a life long running project called Autogenous Radio.

In Conversation is a long running series of informal recordings on people I find interesting or whom ever have a story to tell or an opinion to share.

My reason for these conversations was originally to record as an act of listening. After having spent most of my life making recordings in isolation and away from other people, and yet making images primarily of people, the act of recording people talk is an act of engagement. I have long suffered with bouts of depression and this has helped me greatly in focussing my concerns outwards and listening to others lives speak through their words and experiences.
I generally try to maintain silence throughout the recordings unless I feel as though I can engage, and I also take make some images, as I do with everything.

Recording life through vision or sound, for me has, when I look back on it now, been a silent filtration and reflection process. Learning about myself through other people’s experiences, and in turn that action opened me up to a great sense of self-awareness then I had previously imagined.
It’s a terrible thing to grow up in fear, and it sets precedence on everything else throughout the rest of your life, and for me doing this has been an act of sabotaging that.

The first in the Series is with Ben Tousey. Ben is a writer and software writer. I met him repeatedly in a cafe in Seattle and after a few conversations asked him if he would like to part of my in conversation series.

This was recorded on the R-26 using a wired Rode Lavallière and the internal Omni mic for ambience. Mixdown and stitched with Audacity as the recording exceeded a file size limitation of PCM WAV file by 15 minutes. No other editing has been done.

Thank you so much to Ben for this opportunity.

The second in the series is with Nina Vukmanic.
I have known Nina for three years. Upon meeting her I realised I had someone very special with an intriguing life and a fascinating outlook on life.
Nina was born in Sarajevo in what is now Bosnia-Herzegovina, and was forced to leave during the civil war where she moved to Germany and had her twenties in a small city near the french border. Growing up was hard, made harder by war and harder by persecution and gender identity issues. Nina migrated to the US ten years ago and has been living in Seattle ever since.
I made this recording with her just three weeks after my return for six month trip to India.

This was recorded on the Roland R-26 using a wired Rode Lavallière microphone and the internal Omni microphones for ambience. Mixdown with Audacity.

Thank you so much to Nina for the opportunity.
